Pros and cons of MBA after engineering
Pros of MBA after engineering
1. Higher Paycheck
One of the main benefits of doing an MBA after engineering is that you can get a higher paycheck and salary package as compared to your colleagues who have not done MBA after their engineering graduation.
According to the bureau of labour statistics the median annual salary package of management is 108,000 USD.
On average you can expect to earn between 7 to 8 lakh rupees per annum after pursuing MBA with your engineering degree and
Of course this amount will depend upon different engineering branches and also upon the companies that hire you and also upon your experience, performance and skills, etc.

Another big benefit of choosing an MBA after an engineering degree is that you can have a wide career option and get many other career opportunities in your life.
You have many options because you will be taught many subjects including finance, economics, HR, marketing, statistics, management, accounting and entrepreneurship.
For example after you pursue your MBA you can get many different job opportunities in businesses like,

This can be both good and bad things for engineer as the good thing is if you found that you are not happy being an engineer in your graduation then
You can do an MBA and switch careers by becoming a marketing manager or any other career option which are mentioned earlier, I will discuss the bad aspects of this in the disadvantages section in the blog.
Apart from that you can also work in many industries and companies if you want to you such as healthcare, education, retail management,
manufacturing industries, IT sector, consulting based companies, ecommerce, software companies, government organisations, banks, etc.
Because at the end of the day if you want to manage business in today’s world, an MBA graduate can help you do that.
3. It teaches important skills
Another big reason why you should pursue MBA after your engineering degree is that it can teach you some important skills which are not just used in business but also in life in general.
A good MBA degree in a good college can teach you a lot of things & skills like,
- You can learn communication skills
- You can learn and grow your networking skills
- You can learn time management skills
- You can learn decision making and problem solving skills
- You can also learn how to perform well in pressure situations and leadership skills
You can also get a lot of real world and work experience by visiting businesses while getting your MBA degree.
An MBA degree can also help you grow a lot in your life by increasing your thinking ability and growing your critical thinking skills so it is not just the education degree
which can help you in your career by getting a good job but it can also work as an overall personality development course for you if you have not learnt these skills in your undergraduation of engineering.
And the majority of the engineers pursue a degree in MBA in order to start their own business by learning all the important skills of starting one and becoming an entrepreneur.
4. Grow your network
Another big benefit of doing an MBA after engineering is that it can help you not only with your career but also grow your network by meeting new people.
You can grow your network by meeting new people while taking internship in the company, you can also find many people
who are also like minded in your MBA college who also want to start their own business, ambitious and career driven people.
you can also get a chance to work and build a relationship with top entrepreneurs in the industry and as we all know that
your network will determine your net worth because your network will help you get many opportunities to succeed in your life and build your net worth.
5. Work in multinational companies & good scope
Another big reason to pursue MBA after your engineering degree is that you can get a chance to work in many multinational companies for example
you can get to work in companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Pepsico, Accenture, McKinsey and many more companies.
All of these companies are essentially businesses so they need people to manage tasks in the business like
management of people and marketing managers and you can get many other opportunities which I already mentioned earlier after MBA degree to work in these multinational companies.
Another big reason why majority of the companies would like to hire engineers with MBA graduation degrees is that
engineers who are related to technology-based branches like computer science engineering then they will have good knowledge regarding technology with things like coding and
They also have knowledge regarding running a business or managing people which can be a great combination and a great asset for any
multinational companies to grow it further because every business has to move online, there is no other option especially after the impact of covid pandemic.
According to data, employment opportunities in management area is going to grow by 9% between 2020 to 2030 which is quite good.
I also believe that there will be more demand of Engineering graduates who also have MBA degree in the upcoming future because
MBA gives you lots of important skills to not only run a business but also manage it along with having knowledge in tech like coding which is key.
At the same time when you are applying for any job, having MBA degree can give you a competitive edge over other people who are also applying for the same job because
earning an MBA degree is not very easy task and if you have an MBA degree then obviously the recruiter would know that
you have important skills of running a business and managing people and all others soft skills apart from having the hard skills like coding and being hard working.
6. Flexible timings of degree
Another big benefit of this MBA degree is that you can get flexible timing in some colleges of MBA which means that.
Many colleges offer part-time and weekend MBA courses for people who need to gather some work experience and learn at the same time.
These are all the advantages of an MBA degree after engineering.
Cons of MBA after engineering
1. Competition
This is the main disadvantage when it comes to doing an MBA after engineering.
According to a report of India today, out of 1.5 million engineering students who graduate every year in India only 7% engineering graduates are employable.
And there is no need to mention that more than 80% of the engineers in India are unemployed or unemployable because they do not have the skills both hard and soft to get a job.
For more information you can read my guide on why engineers in India are unemployed.
Because of majority of the engineers are unemployed after the get their graduation degree either, most of the engineering graduates spend their time at home doing nothing or
go for higher studies like Mtech or MBA hoping to get a job someday or they would prepare for government jobs like UPSC and SSC.
Because of this reason, the number of engineers who pursue MBA degrees has grown exponentially in recent years.
If you ever wanted to pursue an MBA degree after your engineering graduation then you must have heard about the examination called CAT, this is the exam you need to write to get admission into top business schools in India like IIM, and based
upon the latest reports of data over 1.9 lakh students have appeared for the exam for approximately 5000 seats available in various IIm colleges in India and it is expected that the success ratio of this exam is around 2% which is extremely difficult to crack.
Apart from engineers there are also undergraduates who have BBA degree also pursue MBA as post graduation like how Btech graduates go for Mtech which also increases the competition.
Because of this it is one of the most competitive degrees you can choose.
2. Costs & time requirement
Another big disadvantage is that it can cost a lot of money and time in order to get an MBA degree.
The total fee structure of the MBA program at IIM-B is around 20 lakhs.
This is a huge amount of fees and at the same time you can also have to spend 2 years or more to get an MBA degree.
And thankfully, you can get a scholarship from IIM if your parents earn less than 600000 INR per annum.
3. Only from top colleges mba can be good
Another disadvantage is that you can enjoy all the great benefits of an MBA in most cases, if you graduate from top institutions and colleges.
Which means, your college and institutions where you get your MBA degree will play a huge role in growth in your career and opportunities, if you get your MBA from low grade business school then that MBA degree might not be very useful for
you because of lack of good professors in the business school and not updated syllabus and because of this there are hundreds and thousands of MBA graduates who are unemployed and wandering on the roads in India after graduating.
4. You can get an unrelated job sometimes
This can be another big disadvantage of doing an MBA.
For example if you have mechanical engineering degree in your undergraduation and you have taken MBA degree then you can get jobs related to marketing and
recruitment of people or product manager which are totally different and not at all related to your core sectors which is mechanical engineering or it can be civil engineering or computer science engineering as well.
These are all the pros and cons or benefits and drawbacks of pursuing an MBA degree after engineering under graduation.
Is an MBA degree worth it?
After reading all the pros and cons of pursuing MBA after engineering and if you are still confused whether you should pursue MBA degree or not then in my opinion you should definitely go for MBA.
An MBA degree is absolutely 100% worth it.
Because we all know that getting an engineering degree is not an easy task, you will have to work hard and also
you will learn a lot of things if you are related to technology based engineering branches like computer science and
having knowledge in business and management along with the technical skills that you have with engineering degree can be a great combination,
mix and a great asset for any business because at the end of the day every business has to move online and have online presence and we have seen many businesses shut down due to covid.
So, MBA is a very good degree you can pursue after engineering graduation.
But I believe that you should only get your MBA after you get some work experience and first get a job so that you can make some money and then get a good MBA degree from a good college after a couple of years.
Your MBA degree and knowledge would not be helpful to you in the initial days of your getting a job, it will be helpful when you get higher positions like get leadership roles in your job so you should only consider MBA after getting some work experience so that you can know how the MBA knowledge
can help you succeed in your career and you can also have the money to pay for the fees of the college.
