Is GATE exam compulsory to do Mtech for engineering students?

To answer simply, the GATE exam is not compulsory to do Mtech and for engineering students and this exam is also not compulsory to do Masters but it is one of the best exams you can give which can be really helpful in your career.

It is expected that this exam can become a compulsory exit exam for engineering students by looking at the unemployed engineering graduates of our country but the AICTE

has not officially confirmed it yet and the board also made it clear that GATE exam is not considered compulsory exam to take for engineers to get admission into higher education like Mtech or masters.

  1. You can get admission into colleges for MTech through sponsored seats but there is some eligibility criteria you need to match such as you need to have some work experience and pay some hefty amount for admission but he will not receive any financial assistance from the institute
  2. Some esteemed institutions and IIITs like IIIT Delhi, hyderabad, Bhubaneswar SRM University, VIT University organise their own entry-level examinations through which candidates can achieve their career aspiration of completing MTech without GATE, Qualifying these university-level exams is comparatively easier than that of a national-level exam like GATE,
  3. You can also get admission into many Mtech colleges by writing their own entrance exam of the university which is alternative to GATE exam and some popular universities are University of Hyderabad, Jamia Millia Islamia, Pondicherry University, JNU, etc
  4. You can also get direct admission in many Mtech colleges without the GATE exam and some popular universities which accept direct admission are Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University, University of Delhi, jamia Millia Islamia , Tezpur University ,Hyderabad University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Pondicherry University , babasaheb Naik College of Engineering
  5. You can also get admission into Mtech colleges in many private universities and colleges but the problem can be is that the college fees can be on higher side.

There are many other entrance exams for MTech other than GATE which are mainly specific competitive exams conducted by different institutes

such as BITS organises its own Higher Degree Entrance Exam for ME programmes while you can also appear for exams like VITMEE, IPU CET, IIT Delhi MTech Entrance Exam, amongst others.

Now that you know that there are alternatives for gate exam to get admission into Mtech colleges but there are a few reasons why I would recommend you to choose GATE exam before you can get admission to Mtech colleges such as,

  1. By getting admission into Mtech college through GATE exam you can get stipend and scholarship of 12400rs everymonth by AICTE and 20k grant every year untill you complete your MTech degree though this exam which can aid you financially,
  2. Apart from the stipend amount, If the candidates do not prefer staying in the hostels and rooms offered by the college, they get qualified to get an HRA amount per month along with the stipend amount.
  3. The gate exam also tests your under graduation knowledge, it is like a self assessment test which will help you understand what you have learnt in the four years of your under graduation.
  4. Another big advantage is that you can get a chance to study in foreign universities if you wanted to you for your post-graduation like Mtech and Ms. Some of the international institutes accept GATE scores such as the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore, Technical University of Germany, and RWTH Aachen University.
  5. By scoring good marks in the GATE exam you can also get a chance of admission into top IIT colleges and study your PG in there such as IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur.
