How to get admission into IIT after 10th & 12th?

Now let’s take a look at step by step on how you can get admission into IIT colleges after your 10th and 12th in detail.

Step 1: Take PCM in your intermediate course after 10th education

The first step you need to take is you should get maths physics and chemistry as your main subjects in your intermediate education after completing your 10th class studies from your school.

These subjects are very important and they are the eligibility criteria to get admission into IIT and if you take arts course or medical course then you cannot get into IIT or any other engineering college in our country.

Step 2: choose a good college for your intermediate education

Now that you have selected your intermediate course you should get admission into a good college for your intermediate education.

It is very important that you get admission into a good college for your intermediate education because one of the main eligibility criteria for IIT is that you should have at least 75% of the marks or be present in the top 20 percentile in your 12th board exams to be eligible for IIT admission through the JEE entrance exam so

you should take a lot of time in selecting the right college and university for your intermediate education which can teach you all the basics and concepts properly so that you can score good marks in your 12th board exams and obviously you should get admission in a college which is recognised by the government and which is a popular college instead of a remote college no-one heard of before.

After you get admission to good college for intermediate education now it’s time to learn all the important information and details about the entrance exam for IIT admission, here are some important information you need to know about the exam.

JEE exam also known as joint entrance exam which is conducted by national testing agency to get admission in various engineering colleges in our country including IITs. Now thankfully this exam is conducted twice every year so that students can get one more chance of applying for the exam in the year only.

Now if any student attempted 2 exams of JEE mains conducted in April and June month then the exam where the student scored best marks will be considered whether he will qualify or not for the next exam.

There are two stages of this exam which are main and advanced, Total of 14 lakh students have attempted jee mains exam both in September and January session combined but out of them only 2.5 students have been eligible for the advance exam out of which 1.6 lakh students have took the registrations for advanced exam so it’s all about clearing the mains exam and writing the advance to get admission in IIT.

Now because there are a huge number of students applying and attending the exam every year so because there are limited seats in IIT, This exam is very competitive and very tough and only best students will be selected.

This is why the exam is divided into two parts and obviously, the JEE advanced exam is much tougher than the main exam because it has more tough questions, paper patterns and negative marking.

The main difference between both the exams is, jee mains which is the first exam is conducted by a national testing agency, whereas JEE Advanced exam is jointly organized by the seven Zonal Coordinating IITs under the joint admission board guidance.

And you need to score all India rank and also good percentage to get admission into IIT colleges in our country from the advanced exam and this exam is tough because it is prepared by the professors of the IIT college.

Students who clear JEE Mains only are eligible for admission to NITs, IIITs, CFTIs, SFIs, and State Engineering Colleges(for some States) NOT IITs

Hence, for admission into IITs, it is mandatory to clear both the JEE Main and JEE Advanced examinations. This is the main difference between JEE Mains and JEE Advanced.

Step 4: join any coaching institute for JEE exam and start preparing

Now after checking all the important details about exam, Now you should decide whether you should join the coaching institute for this exam or not.

Honestly speaking you can definitely crack JEE exam without getting coaching but the main benefit of coaching is that you can get guidance, step by step structure and road map, and distractions free environment where you can study, etc and if you struggle to be consistent with your studies or you cannot motivate yourself to study at your home, You frequently get distracted and you cannot follow your time table properly or many other reasons.

Step 5: Prepare and clear your JEE mains exam

Now that you have selected your coaching institute or decided whether you should go or not, as soon as you complete your 11th board exams, You should probably get started with preparation for the exam of JEE.

After you write the exam you should try to get the cut-off marks, JEE Main cut-off marks are the minimum marks that a candidate must score for being eligible in JEE Advanced. The cut of marks will depend upon factors like how many students have appeared in exam, difficulty level of the exam cast reservations and availability of seats

For example, in 2021, 87 is cut off mark for general caste students, 68 for OBC, 46 and 34 for SC, ST, and 66 for economically weak section.

  1. You should constantly revise your concepts and problems in JEE preparation as practice makes you perfect
  2. You should also practice the previous year’s question papers of the exam to get an idea of the question paper pattern, toughness of the exam, and know which chapters are frequently asked in the exam
  3. You should also solve all of your doubts about problems with your teacher immediately and ask your teacher to show some tips and techniques to solve problems fast or remember formulas easily using many tricks
  4. Note making is also very important to remember concepts and formulas you can create flow charts, diagrams in your notes for physics can chemistry to take a look at concepts in the last moments of the exam
  5. You should only maintain the books of your coaching institute along with some key books like NCERTs and not more than 3 or 4 books for the subject as having many books can lead to confusion, stress and also costs money
  6. You should also give mock tests quite regularly to your coaching institute and also in your college to identify your strengths and weaknesses and also identify your mistakes, check how much of the knowledge you have, prepare yourself for the final exam
  7. Most students try to prepare for the exam in the last couple of months, This I think is not a good idea because many students end up failing in the exam, and preparing in the last couple of months can lead to a lot of stress and burden of the syllabus so I would recommend you to prepare as early as possible like After your 11th board exams only
  8. You should also create a timetable or follow the timetable of your coaching institute and create goals everyday achieve them and reward yourself to become happy of achieving those goals
  9. Consistency is the key to the success of this exam, You should know more than 1.5 million students are preparing for this exam to get a single seat in IIT every year so this exam is very competitive and tough and the student who is consistent and hard-working wins the race, there’s no shortcut to it
  10. Apart from working hard you also need to focus on your health and diet, Stop eating junk food and food that cause laziness sleepiness, and bloating which can affect your concentration and start eating foods that promote energy and increase your concentration and also focus on exercise for maintaining good health and please don’t sacrifice your sleep for studies as it gives your brain rest and time to relax and sleep is very important for your memory and concentration

Step 6: Get cut-off marks &, prepare for the advanced exam

After you get the cut off marks depending upon your caste, and other factors then you should start preparing for advanced exam.

Now the main eligibility for students appearing for this exam is they must have cleared the 12th standard exam with more than 75 percent marks for general category students and 65% for SC, ST, and PWD students or you should be among the top 20% in your exam.

And you should also know that the exam pattern weightage of the marks toughness of the exam will also be different in the advanced exam as compared to the main and this exam is tougher than the previous one because the paper will be prepared by the professors of the top IITs in our country.

This exam requires more concentration higher effort and hard work and more consistency as compared to the previous one and most importantly this exam is conducted only once every year and every student has only two chances in a consecutive year to write this exam which means if you fail in one year you will have to take a drop for the next year preparation.

  • The exam has two papers- Paper 1,2. and 3 hours each for normal students. However, 4 hours for each paper for PWD students.
  • For JEE Advanced students can get only two chances and attempts whereas three for mains exam.

  1. Competition- more than 1.5 million students apply and attend JEE mains exam every year
  2. Caste reservations- more than 55% of the seats in IIT and NIT are reserved for various caste students including students with disabilities, economically weaker section students, SC, ST, women, etc, your caste matters a lot for IIT admission
  3. Toughness- this exam is very tough as there is negative marking involved which means for every wrong answer, a few marks will be deducted from your overall score depending upon your exam which is the mains or advanced stage and you need to solve both numerical and multiple-choice questions in the very limited time of 3 hours in the online mode
  4. Limited seats- The total number of seats for undergraduate programs in all IITs is 16,232 so the acceptance rate in IITs is 0.5% as more than a million students apply for exams to get admission into this college
  5. Age limit- there is no age limit for JEE but you need to pass the 10th and 12th exams in the respective year
  6. Top IIT- there are 23 total IIT colleges but only a few are popular, prestigious like IIT Delhi Bombay Kharagpur Kanpur and Madras, etc because they are old and located in top cities of our country.
  7. Fees & scholarship- It can cost you around 8 to 10 lakh rupees for an engineering course in IIT but you can get a complete scholarship of 4 years if you belong to a certain caste-like SC ST or economically weaker section so it is very costly to get admission in IIT even though it is a government college
  8. Languages in the exam- Apart from English and Hindi other languages In which the question paper In the exam comes are Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu which helps students from different states can easily understand the questions in the exam
  9. Attempts of exam- any student can give only three attempts in the consecutive year in jee mains exam, This exam is conducted twice every year and there are limited chances to attempt the exam for admission to IIT
  10. Admission for NRIs- for NRIs there is no special quota and reservation policy, You need an AIU certificate to get your foreign degree valid before you give this exam for IIT admission
